In loving memory of Batumbil Burarrwanga 1 Feb 1956 - 19th December 2018
This film contains the voices and images of people who have passed away.
In 1964, as a young girl of 8 years, Batumbil Burarrwaa, with her younger sisters walked with their father Gatirri Burarrwanga from their homes at Mata Mata to the eastern boundaries of their homelands at Elizabeth Bay/Cape Wilberforce. This was a journey of around 40 kilometres depending on the coastland routes taken. Gatirri took his daughters along the tracks of the ancestral dogs, celebrated in manikay (ceremony). These ancestral dogs are very special. They were as big as horses, still walk the earth in another dimension of time and space and regularly visited Mrs. Burarrwanga in her dreams. On the walk the names of places, rivers and coastal bays and their associated stories had to be learned. At the end of the walk Gatirri and two of his brothers died inexplicably of unknown causes and were buried at Elizabeth Bay.
The walking party were rescued by relatives and the girls were sent to school at Galiwinku/Elcho Island. All their lives the women, particularly Batumbil, dreamed of walking together to retrace the pathway, to pay their respects at their father and uncles graves and to pass on their knowledge to coming generations and the world.
This film was completely financed and supported by Brigitte Ross, who accompanied Batumbil and her sisters on the walk, retracing their father's journey 52 years later in 2017. The walk took place after discussions over many campfires.
Dhukarr Yäkthun is a film by Brigitte Ross & Batumbil Burarrwanga, Doris Yelthun Dhambing Burarrwanga, Daisy Gunygula Burarrwanga - Immortal Sisters: All Production, Financial, Creative Costs.
